How I teach

I have one aim for all singers, to release each unique voice for free and full singing: beauty of sound; agility of execution; expression of intelligence and passion in response to the song, its story and its images. Every pupil is unique, so your lesson will not be identical with another’s, but pupils will work in many of the same ways.

What we actually do

We discover our body and its ideal directions. We develop healthy, energizing breathing. We explore the range of tones, timbres and qualities of the singing voice. We strengthen the singing apparatus with carefully chosen vocal exercises. We learn songs classical and contemporary, opera and oratorio arias, melodies, lieder, cantigas, folksongs and showstoppers. We rehearse our numbers and we might perform them in a local pupils’ concert, a public exam or a competitive festival.

The essential requirements

The learning process depends upon a bond of trust between teacher and pupil. We encounter each other as fellow human beings with a shared love of singing. Learning is a journey from where you are to where you want to be. We begin by “not knowing how”, accepting difficulties and frustrations. If you cannot bear criticism, you cannot learn. But we need praise and encouragement too. What I cannot offer is to make you a star. If what you want is “to sound just like ( - name your own idol)” then I am not the teacher for you. But I offer something better: you have a unique voice of your own to be discovered. What use is a copy of some other voice?

Where and when

I teach in my home, 24 Park Road, close to Rugby town centre. The train station is a few minutes’ walk, buses even closer. There is free parking outside. Lessons can be booked for daytimes or evenings, Monday to Saturday. Your first lesson is a free-of-charge consultation. Fees for subsequent lessons are £36 per hour (working adults) £24 per hour (students; concessions). Half-hour lessons are possible. So are shared lessons, 2 to 4 pupils by negotiation, when fees can be reduced.
